Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Parkroyal
At Parkroyal, we are committed to preparing our pupils for a rapidly changing world. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support teaching and learning, reduce administrative tasks and help teachers meet pupils’ individual needs. We are committed to using AI safely, responsibly and ethically, with pupils’ learning, wellbeing and safety at the heart of every decision.
What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is technology that enables computers to carry out tasks that usually require human intelligence. These tasks include recognising patterns, understanding language, solving problems and making predictions. AI uses information to produce answers, identify patterns or suggest solutions, but it does not think or understand in the same way as a human.
AI is already part of everyday life. It is being used by the NHS to identify possible health problems, to support supermarkets in managing deliveries, to detect fraud in banking and to manage traffic flow. On your phone, AI can filter spam emails, improve search results and remove unwanted objects from photographs.
Our Core Principles
These principles guide how we use AI in school:
-
Supporting, not replacing, teachers: AI can support teaching and learning, but it cannot replace human relationships, high-quality teaching or teachers’ professional judgement.
-
Protecting privacy and safety: We protect pupils’ personal data and never enter sensitive information into unapproved AI tools.
-
Human oversight: Staff check all AI-generated lesson materials, resources and communication drafts before using them to ensure they are accurate and suitable.
-
Developing critical thinking: We help children understand that AI can make mistakes or produce biased information. Human creativity, empathy and independent thinking remain essential.
Our Approved Tools
All AI tools must be approved through the Aspire Educational Trust’s approval process before they are used in school. Our currently approved tools are:
-
Google Gemini https://gemini.google.com/
-
Google Notebook https://notebook.google.com/
-
Teachmate AI https://app.teachmate.com/
-
National College AI https://nationalcollege.com/ai
-

How We Currently Use AI in School
-
Lesson Differentiation – AI helps teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of different pupils. It can adjust reading levels, translate text into other languages and provide extra support for children who need it. It can also break tasks into smaller steps, create extension activities for pupils who need more challenge and develop comprehension questions. This helps make learning accessible and provides suitable levels of support and challenge.
-
Resource Creation – AI helps teachers create resources for lessons, assemblies and other aspects of school life. These may include worksheets, presentations, visual aids and materials to support positive behaviour. It can also turn written information into images and other visual formats. By reducing the time spent preparing resources, AI can help staff focus more on teaching and supporting pupils.
-
Administrative Tasks – AI can help staff prepare message templates, draft routine communications and organise information in other documents. It can also help structure written content and adapt messages for different audiences. These uses can save time and improve consistency, allowing staff to focus more on pupils and their learning. Staff always check AI-generated content before using or sharing it.
How We Keep Pupils and Data Safe
Protecting pupils’ personal data and keeping them safe online are priorities for our school.
-
Approved software: We use AI tools that have been assessed and approved through the Trust’s processes, including checks on data protection and security.
-
Protecting personal information: Staff must never enter pupils’ names, dates of birth, medical information or other sensitive details into public or unapproved AI tools.
-
Safe learning environments: Where pupils use educational software with AI features, staff ensure that the platform has been appropriately assessed and that suitable safeguards are in place.
Academic Integrity and Pupil Work
At Parkroyal, children need to develop essential skills in reading, writing, problem-solving and independent thinking. AI must support this learning, not take its place.
-
Children’s own work: Homework, classwork and creative projects should draw on each child’s own ideas, cognitive effort and developing skills.
-
Learning how to use AI: ‘Introduction to AI’ is a unit within our Year 4 Computing Curriculum. Children may learn how AI works and how it can be used responsibly, but it must not become a shortcut that prevents them from developing essential skills.
-
Open discussion: Teachers encourage children to ask questions about technology, recognise its limitations and think carefully about the information it provides.
-
Parent and carer partnership: We encourage parents and carers to support their child’s use of AI tools as a helpful scaffold for curiosity and understanding, rather than a replacement for their child's own thinking, effort, and independent practice.
