Our future, our choices!

You’re never too young to start dreaming about what you might like to be when you grow up!

Thinking about careers can be really exciting; there are so many amazing jobs in the world. You could become a doctor who helps people feel better, a teacher who inspires children to learn, a firefighter who saves lives or even a game designer who creates fun video games. By thinking about your interests now – like what you enjoy doing, what you’re good at, and what makes you happy – you can start to imagine your future. Remember, your ideas can change as you grow and that’s okay – what matters is being curious, trying new things and believing that you can achieve something wonderful!

In our school, we learn about different careers through Picture News, which helps us understand the world around us in a fun and interesting way. By looking at real-life news stories, we discover a variety of jobs people do, such as journalists, scientists, engineers and rescue workers. This helps us see how these careers make a difference and why they are important and also how diverse the workplace can be. It also gives us the chance to think about our own interests and start imagining what we might like to be when we grow up. You also have the opportunity to take on responsibilities in school – like being a Rights Respecting Ranger, safeguarding ambassador or playground leader – which helps you develop important skills like teamwork, communication and responsibility. All of these activities encourage you to think about your interests, build confidence and begin imagining what you might like to do in the future.

School-based activities :

  • Science week – every year we explore the world of science, which includes looking at the roles and jobs within the science industry. In one science week we explored 'Not all scientists wear lab coats'. We came to school dressed as a scientist but not in a white lab coat – gardeners, beekeepers, vets, astronauts and weather reporters were just some of the dress-up ideas from our pupils.

Visitor-based events:

  • We invite local residents of Macclesfield to visit our school. When you are in Reception you may meet the local vet or the local fire service. We invite a local comic artist into our school to support many events and you have the chance, when you are in Phase 3, to attend his club and learn about his career drawing cartoons.

  • Each year, we hold a special Leadership Conference for pupils who have leadership roles in school. During this exciting event we invite people from our local community in Macclesfield to come and talk to you about their jobs and the journey they took to become leaders. It’s a great opportunity to learn from real experiences, ask questions and be inspired to develop your own leadership skills!

Education visits wider than school:

  • When you are in Year 5 you will visit Safety Central where you will take part in exciting, real-life safety scenarios that help you learn how to stay safe and make responsible choices. During the visit you will meet different professionals such as firefighters, police officers and paramedics, and discover how these people help others in their jobs. This experience may help you to start thinking about careers that involve helping and protecting the community whilst you also build important skills like teamwork, problem-solving and confidence.

  • In Year 6 you will make a visit to meet the 'Crucial Crew'.  You will meet professionals like police officers, firefighters and health workers and discover how their jobs help keep people safe every day. This experience can help you start thinking about your future career by showing you the different roles people have in the community and the important skills they use, such as teamwork, responsibility and quick thinking. It might even inspire you to choose a job where you can help others and make a positive difference!
